Safety and Setup

Step 1 of 10 · Set up a safe, organized bench before you load a single round.

← Reloading A-Z: all steps

Reloading is a precision process, and it starts with a safe, distraction-free workspace. Your bench should be solid enough that the press does not flex, well lit, and kept free of anything that does not belong in the process.

Store powder and primers in their original containers, away from heat, sparks and open flame, and keep only the powder you are using on the bench. Wear safety glasses, and never smoke or eat while loading.

Most importantly, work from published load data. Buy at least one current reloading manual and cross-check data from the powder and bullet makers. Start below listed maximums and work up carefully.

Keep a load log from day one: components, lot numbers, charges, seating depths and results. Good records are what turn reloading into repeatable precision.
