Brass Sorting and Inspection
Step 2 of 10 · Know what you are working with: sort by headstamp and inspect every case.
Consistent ammunition starts with consistent brass. Sort cases by headstamp and, ideally, by lot, since case capacity varies between manufacturers and even between production runs.
Inspect every case before it goes further. Look for split necks, cracks near the case head, signs of head separation, deep dents and loose primer pockets. Any case that shows signs of failure gets discarded, not reloaded.
Many precision shooters go further and sort by case weight or internal capacity. It is not required to get started, but it is one of the easiest ways to tighten velocity spreads as you progress.
