Bullet Seating
Step 9 of 10 · Set seating depth deliberately and measure the results.
Seating depth controls how far the bullet sits from the rifling, often called the jump. Some rifles shoot best with the bullet close to or touching the lands, others prefer more jump. Overall length must also fit your magazine if you are feeding from one.
Measure cartridge base to ogive with a comparator rather than relying only on overall length, since bullet tips vary. A micrometer seating die makes small, repeatable adjustments easy.
Seat slowly and consistently, check the first rounds of each batch, and record your seating depth in your load log so you can repeat what works.
