Extreme Long Range (ELR)
Discipline Definition & Philosophy
ELR is the pursuit of hitting targets at distances where the bullet's flight time is measured in seconds (typically 1,760 yards to 3,500+ yards). The philosophy centers on the "Triad", the synergy between the Shooter, the Spotter, and the Ballistician. Unlike PRS, which tests movement, ELR tests the ability to account for "secondary" ballistic variables that most shooters never consider: the Coriolis effect, Eötvös effect, aerodynamic jump, and spin drift.
The Origin Story (History)
-
The "Big Bore" Roots: ELR evolved from Fifty Caliber Shooters Association (FCSA) matches and military snipers pushing the limits of the .50 BMG and .338 Lapua.
-
The King of 2 Miles (KO2M): Founded in 2015 at the NRA Whittington Center, KO2M revolutionized the sport by moving it from "group shooting" to a high-stakes, impact-based qualifying format.
-
The ELR Alliance (2026): For years, ELR was split between various "Outlaw" matches and the KO2M circuit. In February 2026, the ELR Alliance was formed to act as the central governing body. It marks the first successful effort to unify rules, rankings, and match calendars under one roof, providing a "World Ranking" system similar to the PRS.
The Major Leagues & Sanctioning Bodies
-
ELR Alliance: The newly formed "Hub" for the sport, providing the unified points series and the 2026 Match Calendar.
-
KO2M (King of 2 Miles): The most prestigious individual event in the world, now with qualifying matches held globally (France, South Africa, USA).
The Rulebook & Scoring
For the unified 2026 standards, shooters should refer to the new Alliance handbook:
-
Unified Rules: ELR Alliance Official Rules
-
KO2M Specifics: KO2M Global Rules
-
Scoring Philosophy: ELR uses a weighted multiplier. A first-round impact is worth significantly more points than a second or third-round hit. In most "King" formats, if you fail to hit a target within your allotted rounds (usually 3–5), you are "knocked out" and cannot attempt the further, more valuable targets.
The Standard Loadout (Equipment)
ELR gear is massive, heavy, and highly specialized to handle the extreme pressures of magnum cartridges.
The Rifle
Often weighing 30 to 50+ lbs. Barrels are typically 34" to 40" long to maximize muzzle velocity.
The Glass
High-magnification precision scopes designed for extreme distance shooting. Because targets require more elevation than a scope can physically dial, shooters often use an optical prism system that shifts the image to add 100+ MOA of additional elevation.
Support Gear
Large-footprint bipods and heavy rear bags built to stabilize extremely heavy rifles and manage the recoil of large magnum cartridges.
Electronics
Advanced ballistic solvers paired with environmental sensors are considered essential. These systems calculate firing solutions based on atmospheric conditions, often used alongside laser rangefinding equipment to confirm extreme distances.
